[New Study] Blogging, Twitter & Facebook Usage By The Fortune 500
Hot off the press!
The Center for Marketing Research (CMR) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth have just released their 2010 study into the adoption of social media tools by America's largest companies, the Fortune 500.
Having started off tracking corporate blogging in 2008, the CMR team added Twitter in 2009, and for 2010 have included usage of Facebook.
It's the first time any systematic review of Facebook usage for the entire Fortune 500 has been conducted.
Here are some of the highlights:
- 56% of the Fortune 500 are now on Facebook
- insurance companies are most likely to be on Facebook
- 60% of the Fortune 500 have Twitter accounts
- this is a dramatic 35% increase over last year
- 35% seem to be making a real effort to engage with the public on Twitter
- 9 of the top 10 companies have Twitter accounts
- 23% of the Fortune 500 have a corporate blog
- 38% of the top 100 companies have a blog
So what does this all mean?
The study demonstrates the growing importance of social media in the business world and a willingness to explore new more direct ways to communicate.
And whilst the use of blogging seems to have levelled off (which is not surprising given that it is one of the most mature social media technologies), both Twitter and Facebook have seen strong adoption.
Is your company embracing the social media revolution?
